The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie: An Honest Review

Agatha Christie is no doubt one of the most famous authors in the world, even today. Most famous for her murder mysteries revolving around the iconic detective Hercule Poriot, each mystery brings a totally different story.

I’ve read a lot of her books and all of them have been very interesting reads for me; but this book in particular is my personal favourite: The ABC Murders.

Let’s delve into this story, discuss its plot, its special points, and see if this might be a book for you; of course with no spoilers!

What is it about?

The renowned detective Poriot embarks on a case; or more specifically many cases of seemingly senseless and spontaneous murders happening all across the country. The only link between all these incidents is that the names of the victims in sequence are in perfect alphabetical order.

The killer taunts the authorities and Poriot himself, sending them letters writing out a deliberate set of clues and even telling them the next move as the twisted and calculated killings keep going on and eventually Poriot’s skill is the last string of hope.

Is this book for you?

I will 100% recommend this book to murder mystery enthusiasts and general readers alike. I also think that readers of most age groups will enjoy the story as well, as it always keep you engaged and never loses its pace.

Personal thoughts

Murderer’s Perespective

Little spoiler here (sorry), there are very little parts of the story that seems to be from the perespective of perhaps the killer himself, and through a disturbed and confused perespective of his psyche as well. This was something I did not expect and something I didn’t want to spoil, but I had to mention this as it amazingly sets things up for the rest of the story.

Plot Twist: False Ending

After the mystery is solved, the book seems to prepare you for that small relaxing phase where you’re just prepared to read a small outro and close the book. I have read enough Agatha Christie boons to know that there is always a plot twist which is always different and always totally makes sense and if you re-read the book, it makes even more sense. But despite all of that happening and the story seemingly coming to an end; it just gives you enough time to relax right before you realise that there was one little piece that was left out, and now it leads to a whole another puzzle.

Conclusion

Honestly, this review turned out to be a little shorter than I expected it to be, considering all the stuff there is in the book. I think it’s because if I did share more I would be giving a number of spoilers, and if you’re still haven’t read the book, I don’t want to ruin the mystery for you.

This was a very nice read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not just because the story is my favourite, but because this book is overall very well rounded, I feel that I can give this book an unwavering

4/5
